CNC spindle repair for Iceland

We are an independent spindle workshop near Bonn in Germany, and that single bench is the whole operation. There is nothing of ours in Iceland. A spindle from Reykjavík or Akureyri reaches us as air freight from Keflavík, or by sea through Rotterdam when the machine can wait.

The market

A small market with particular machines

Iceland is a small manufacturing market and the machining that exists is tied to what the country does: fish processing and packing equipment, aluminium smelting and its support shops, geothermal and power plant maintenance, and general engineering serving all three. CNC work is concentrated in a modest number of shops, mostly around the capital area and Akureyri. The spindles that come from there are usually mid-size milling spindles from vertical centres and turning spindles from workhorse lathes, often on machines that have been kept running well past their normal life.

Machine brand

Machine brands we see from Iceland

We are independent and not tied to any builder. These are the makes whose spindles come across the bench most often.

Getting the spindle here

Air freight, and when to leave the spindle alone

Iceland is in the EEA but outside the EU customs union, so customs formalities apply both ways. Your forwarder handles them, and a temporary-export and re-import procedure is normally the right one. Air freight from Keflavík is the practical route; sea freight is cheaper but slow. Be honest about the arithmetic: for a common spindle that can be exchanged through a supplier, freight to Germany and back rarely pays for itself. For a rare, high-value or discontinued unit it often does.

Questions

Iceland spindle repair — frequently asked

Sometimes not, and we will say so. If the unit is a standard type your machine supplier can exchange, the freight and customs handling on top of the repair usually make exchange the better deal. If it is discontinued, unusual or expensive to replace, shipping it to the bench is normally the cheaper answer.

Customs formalities apply in both directions because Iceland sits outside the EU customs union. Your forwarder handles the declarations; a temporary-export and re-import procedure is usually the right one for goods going out for repair and coming back. We supply the repair documentation the forwarder asks for. We do not act as your customs agent.

Only by prior technical arrangement, and it rarely makes sense for Iceland. Bearing work needs presses, heaters, a balancing machine and a test stand, none of which travel. On-site visits are useful for diagnosis, alignment checks and refitting, not for a rebuild. We will tell you plainly which of the two your fault needs.
