Makino Spindle Repair and Overhaul

We repair and rebuild spindles from Makino machining centres. CNC Spindle Service is an independent workshop in Sankt Augustin, Germany, not authorised by or affiliated with Makino. Most spindles reach us by carrier; you can also crate a unit and send it directly. On-site removal, refitting or measurement abroad is possible only by prior technical arrangement.

Scope

Makino spindle systems we work on

Makino built its reputation on very high spindle speeds for graphite and mould-and-die work, and those spindles are usually assembled to a much finer balance grade than a general machining centre needs. That changes the repair: a bearing set that would be acceptable elsewhere is not acceptable here, and every rotating part has to go back with its balance re-established rather than simply reassembled clean and true.

High-speed integral motor spindles

The rotor sits on the spindle shaft itself, so a winding fault, a bearing fault and a thermal problem can all present the same way from outside. These units are stripped completely, measured, and rebuilt with the bearing arrangement and preload determined for that spindle type rather than a generic set.

Graphite and mould-and-die spindles

Units from graphite and hardened-steel finishing work arrive with abrasive dust past the seals and with bearings that have run hot for long periods. Sealing air paths, seal geometry and the condition of the shaft nose all get checked, because rebuilding the bearings alone tends to buy only a short life.

Horizontal machining centre spindles

Units reaching us usually come from a-series horizontals and similar pallet machines, with larger tapers and long unattended duty cycles. The work is the same in principle but the parts are heavier: shaft, spacers and housing are measured for wear before anything is ordered, and the rotary union is inspected with them.

Belt-driven and geared spindle heads

Older and larger machines use a separate motor with a belt or a gear train. Here the fault is often outside the spindle itself: a worn pulley, a slack belt or a coupling. We check the drive line as well as the cartridge, and say which part is actually worn.

The exact configuration depends on the machine model and the year of manufacture. Two machines with the same model designation can carry different spindle units, so we confirm the build from your nameplate photograph before quoting.

Symptoms

Faults we see most often on Makino spindles

Noise and rising vibration

On high-speed Makino spindles the first sign is usually a change in tone rather than an obvious noise. We strip the unit, measure the bearing seats and shaft, and report what the wear pattern shows.

Overheating and thermal drift

Fine-finishing work shows thermal growth quickly. Causes are usually preload set wrong, a blocked oil-air line or a tired chiller circuit. We measure temperature rise on test run before drawing conclusions.

Runout at the taper

Most Makino units reaching us use HSK, so both the taper and the face have to be right. The taper is reground and runout corrected; if the shaft is bent we say so before further spend.

Tool clamping problems

Drawbar force falls as the collet segments and disc springs wear. We measure clamping force, replace the clamping set, and check the release piston stroke and its seals at the same time.

Encoder and orientation faults

Graphite dust and heat are hard on encoders. A spindle that will not orient for a tool change is often an encoder or coupling problem rather than a mechanical one, and we check that first.

Coolant or grease ingress

Graphite machining and through-spindle coolant both attack the front seal. Once dust or coolant reaches the bearings the damage is usually done; we report how far it has travelled inside the unit.

Process

What a repair looks like

The spindle is logged in and inspected on arrival, then dismantled completely. We measure shaft and housing geometry, check the bearing seats, inspect windings and encoder, and photograph what we find. You receive a written quotation with the scope of work before anything is repaired. After the work is done the unit is dynamically balanced, run-in tested and shipped with a test report containing the measured values.

Removal should be carried out by qualified personnel following the machine documentation. If that is not possible on site, ask us about removal and refitting as part of an on-site visit.

Shipping and on-site service

Our workshop is in Germany and we have no branch, warehouse or permanent staff in other countries. Customers outside Germany send the spindle to us by freight forwarder; we inspect, repair, test and return it. On-site work — removal, installation, alignment and commissioning — is possible internationally, but only after the job has been agreed technically in advance, so that the right parts and instruments travel with the technician.

Makino spindle repair — frequently asked

Yes. We are an independent workshop, so a spindle can be sent to us directly without a dealer in the middle, and we are not tied to one manufacturer's parts catalogue. What we cannot do is claim any form of Makino authorisation. We have none, we are not a Makino partner, and we say so plainly.

Units reaching us usually come from V-series and PS-series verticals, F-series machines, the a-series horizontals and graphite mould-and-die machines. That is a description of what we see, not a compatibility list. Send the spindle number and a photograph of the nameplate and we will tell you whether it is work we can take on.

In most cases yes. High-speed units are normally rebuilt with hybrid ceramic bearings of the class the design calls for, and the rotating assembly is balanced to a grade appropriate to the running speed, in the sense of ISO 21940. The achievable figure depends on the condition of the shaft and rotor, so we confirm it after teardown.

Typically 5 to 10 working days from arrival, depending on parts availability and what the teardown reveals. That is an estimate, not a committed date; a binding date is only valid if confirmed in writing. High-speed units sometimes take longer, because special bearing classes are not always on the shelf and the balancing work cannot be rushed.

The spindle is stripped and measured, and that inspection is a chargeable step. You receive a written quotation covering the findings and the proposed repair before any repair work begins, so you can decide with the figures in front of you.
