Hurco Spindle Repair and Rebuild

We rebuild spindles from Hurco machining centres and lathes in our own workshop in Sankt Augustin, Germany. Cartridge units, belt-driven heads and geared spindles are stripped, measured and reassembled here. Send the spindle in, or ask about on-site work by prior technical arrangement. We are an independent repair workshop with no Hurco authorisation and no dealer status.

Scope

Hurco spindle systems we work on

Hurco builds its machines around its own control, but the spindle itself is usually a cartridge: a self-contained assembly that lifts out of the head as one piece. That is useful, because the machine can be brought back up on a spare cartridge while the original is rebuilt. It also means the housing bore and the clamping arrangement in the head have to be checked, not just the cartridge that came off.

Belt-driven cartridge spindles

The standard fit on VM and VMX machining centres. A poly-V or timing belt drives the cartridge from a motor mounted alongside, so side load sits permanently on the rear bearing pair. The cartridge is stripped, the shaft and bores measured, and preload set for the bearing set fitted.

Direct-drive and integral motor spindles

Higher-speed options couple the motor to the shaft directly or build the rotor onto it. There is no belt load, but heat now comes from inside the unit. Cooling passages, the temperature sensor and the rotor are all checked, and any winding fault is identified before mechanical parts are ordered.

Geared spindle heads

Larger VMX and bridge-type machines use a two-range gearbox to hold torque at low speed. Noise from a gear head is often the gears or the shift mechanism rather than the spindle bearings, so the head is separated and both assessed before a bearing set is quoted.

Lathe headstock spindles

TM and TMX turning machines bring a different job: a through-bore shaft carrying chuck and draw tube load as well as cutting load. The headstock is dismantled, the bores and nose checked, and the bearing arrangement rebuilt with the seal and purge details restored.

The exact configuration depends on the machine model and the year of manufacture. Two machines with the same model designation can carry different spindle units, so we confirm the build from your nameplate photograph before quoting.

Symptoms

Faults we see most often on Hurco spindles

Noise and rising vibration

A belt-driven cartridge usually gets louder at the top of its range first. We record the noise, then measure bearing clearance and shaft geometry on the bench rather than guessing from the machine.

Overheating and thermal drift

Grease-packed cartridges drift when preload has risen or the grease has broken down. On direct-drive units the cooling circuit is checked too. The cause is reported after teardown rather than assumed.

Runout at the taper

Crashes and tool changes under load mark the CAT40 or BT40 taper. The taper is reground and runout corrected. If the shaft is bent, we say so before spending money on the rest.

Tool clamping problems

Tools pulling out or seating badly usually trace to a tired disc spring stack, a worn gripper or a drawbar out of adjustment. Clamping force is measured, not estimated from how the unit sounds.

Encoder and orientation faults

Rigid tapping and tool change both need reliable orientation. A loose encoder coupling or a fouled sensor looks like a control problem from the operator panel; we test it mechanically before a drive is blamed.

Coolant or grease ingress

Through-tool coolant and heavy flood work push emulsion past the front seal. Washed-out grease and rusted rolling elements follow. Seals, the rotary union where fitted and the air purge are all restored on reassembly.

Process

What a repair looks like

The spindle is logged in and inspected on arrival, then dismantled completely. We measure shaft and housing geometry, check the bearing seats, inspect windings and encoder, and photograph what we find. You receive a written quotation with the scope of work before anything is repaired. After the work is done the unit is dynamically balanced, run-in tested and shipped with a test report containing the measured values.

What to send with your enquiry

  • Photographs of the spindle nameplate and of the tool interface
  • Machine model, spindle type and year of manufacture
  • A short description of the symptoms and when they appear
  • Any measurements you already have — runout, temperature, vibration, current draw
  • Whether the machine is still assembled or the spindle is already removed

Removal should be carried out by qualified personnel following the machine documentation. If that is not possible on site, ask us about removal and refitting as part of an on-site visit.

Shipping and on-site service

Our workshop is in Germany and we have no branch, warehouse or permanent staff in other countries. Customers outside Germany send the spindle to us by freight forwarder; we inspect, repair, test and return it. On-site work — removal, installation, alignment and commissioning — is possible internationally, but only after the job has been agreed technically in advance, so that the right parts and instruments travel with the technician.

Hurco spindle repair — frequently asked

Yes. We are an independent workshop and take spindles directly from the machine owner or from a service contractor. No dealer needs to be involved, and we are not tied to one manufacturer's parts catalogue. What we cannot claim is Hurco authorisation of any kind. We have none, and we prefer to state that clearly rather than leave it vague.

Units reaching us usually come from VM and VMX vertical machining centres, from the larger bridge-type machines, and occasionally from TM and TMX lathes. Both belt-driven cartridges and geared heads turn up. That describes what we see in the workshop rather than a compatibility promise; each spindle is assessed on its own once it is on the bench.

In most cases yes, and it is usually the sensible route. The cartridge comes out of the head as a complete assembly, so only that part travels. We ask for the drive belt condition and the head bore measurement as well, because a worn housing bore will shorten the life of a rebuilt cartridge.

Typically 5 to 10 working days from arrival, depending on parts availability and what the teardown reveals. It is an estimate, not a committed date; a binding date is only valid if confirmed in writing. A cartridge with standard bearings moves quickly. A geared head, or a taper needing regrinding, takes longer.

The unit is dismantled, measured and assessed, and a written quotation follows before any repair work begins. The assessment is a chargeable job and its price is agreed in advance, so nothing appears on the invoice that you have not seen. If the repair is not worth doing, we say that too.
