CNC spindle repair for Illinois

Every spindle we take on is repaired in one workshop, in Sankt Augustin near Bonn. Nothing of ours is based in Illinois. From Chicago the crate at least has an easy run: O'Hare is one of the simplest places in the country to put a spindle on a direct flight to Frankfurt, an hour and a half from our bench.

The market

Chicago metalworking and the equipment builders

Illinois holds one of the densest metalworking clusters anywhere. Job shops and tool rooms across Chicagoland and the Fox Valley, aerospace and fastener work around Rockford, and the agricultural and construction equipment trade at Peoria, Moline and Rock Island. The spindles follow that spread, from small vertical machining centre cartridges in an Elgin job shop to heavy boring and milling heads in an equipment builder's own plant. The awkward ones are almost always imported: European grinding spindles, Swiss-type headstocks, high-speed heads on machines bought used and no longer supported by anyone.

Getting the spindle here

An easy flight, a crowded local market

The freight leg is not the problem here. Direct air cargo from O'Hare to Frankfurt is routine, and the road leg at this end is short. The problem is that Illinois already carries more spindle rebuilders than most European countries. For a common machining centre cartridge, sending it across the Atlantic rarely pays for itself, and we would rather say so than take the crate. Customs formalities apply in both directions; your forwarder handles them, and a temporary export with re-import after repair is normally the right procedure.

We are independent and not tied to any builder. These are the makes whose spindles come across the bench most often.

Questions

Illinois spindle repair — frequently asked

Usually there is no reason to. The work that reaches us from Illinois is the residue: discontinued European spindles, high-speed heads with no parts route in North America, or a unit that has already been rebuilt twice and still runs hot after an hour. For an ordinary cartridge off a common machining centre, stay local and keep the freight money.

Typically 5 to 10 working days from arrival, depending on parts availability and what the teardown reveals. That is an estimate, not a committed date; a binding date is only valid if we confirm it in writing. Air freight in each direction is on top of it, and the schedule for that belongs to your forwarder rather than to us.

No. One workshop in Germany, no branch, no depot and no permanent staff anywhere in the United States. On-site work in Illinois is possible but only by prior technical arrangement, planned far enough ahead that the right instruments and the likely parts travel with the technician. That suits diagnosis or a difficult removal. Rebuild work always happens on the bench in Sankt Augustin.
