CNC spindle repair for Indiana
We are an independent spindle workshop in Sankt Augustin, near Bonn in Germany, and all repair work happens there. Nothing of ours sits in Indiana. What decides whether a crate is worth sending from Indianapolis, Warsaw or Elkhart is usually not the distance at all. It is what the spindle weighs and what it does for a living.
The market
Engines, recreational vehicles and Warsaw implants
Indiana machining splits into three quite different worlds. Engine and driveline production around Columbus, Indianapolis and Kokomo. The recreational vehicle and trailer trade concentrated at Elkhart and South Bend. And orthopaedic implant manufacture at Warsaw, which is unlike anything else in the Midwest. The implant shops send us the most interesting failures: small high-frequency spindles off Swiss-type and five-axis machines, run hard on titanium and cobalt chrome, where the taper and the bearing set matter more than the parts list suggests. Engine-line spindles are heavier, plainer and generally better served closer to home.
Getting the spindle here
Small spindles fly cheaply, large ones do not
A twenty-kilogram high-speed cartridge crates small, and an air courier will take it without much argument. A motorised boring head off a transfer line is a different proposition: proper pallet, proper cost, and freight in both directions that starts to weigh against the repair itself. So the answer differs by machine, not by state, and it is worth asking first. Customs formalities apply on export and again on re-entry; your forwarder handles them, and a temporary export with re-import after repair is normally the right procedure.

Questions
Indiana spindle repair — frequently asked
High-frequency cartridges from Swiss-type and five-axis machines are routine bench work here: bearing renewal, shaft and taper measurement, drawbar and rotor checks, balancing before the unit goes back. What we will not do is guess at the outcome before it is open. It is stripped and measured first, and then you get a written quotation covering what we found and what we propose.
Often not. For a common spindle that can be exchanged locally, freight to Germany and back rarely pays for itself, and the weight of a transfer-line head makes that worse in both directions. For a rare, high-value or discontinued unit it often does. Send the make, the model and the symptoms, and we will give you a straight answer before anything is crated.
Bench time is typically 5 to 10 working days from arrival, depending on parts availability and what the teardown reveals. That is an estimate, not a committed date; a binding date is only valid if we confirm it in writing. Transatlantic transit sits on top of it and belongs to your forwarder. Plan in weeks rather than days.
