CNC spindle repair for California

Our bench is in Sankt Augustin, near Bonn in Germany, and every repair happens there. A planned technical visit can support diagnosis, removal, alignment or commissioning when work at the machine is appropriate. From the West Coast the freight leg is the longest of any American state, so the first question is not what is wrong with the spindle. It is whether it should fly at all.

The market

Space hardware, implants and wafer-fab parts

California machining runs at the fine end. Space and launch hardware around Los Angeles, Long Beach and the South Bay, defence and aerospace subcontract alongside it, medical device work through Orange County and San Diego, and semiconductor equipment parts up in Fremont and San Jose. It is also where Haas machines are built, so the commonest cartridges have support close to home. The units that travel to us are the outliers: imported grinding and high-speed spindles, ultra-precision heads, and discontinued motor spindles on European machines that nobody nearby is willing to open.

Scope

Spindle work we carry out for customers in California

Every operation below is done in our own workshop in Germany. Follow a link for what it involves and what we need from you. From the West Coast it pays to send photos, vibration readings and the machine history before anything is crated, so the decision to fly the unit rests on evidence. On the ultra-precision heads used for launch hardware, implants and wafer-fab parts, bearing replacement normally goes together with dynamic balancing and taper and runout correction, because those parts are toleranced in microns. Encoder and sensor repair matters on European motor spindles whose feedback parts are no longer listed.

Getting the spindle here

The longest leg from any American state

Air cargo from Los Angeles or San Francisco to Frankfurt is straightforward enough, but it is a long round trip, it is not cheap, and the timing belongs to your forwarder rather than to us. It sits on top of any workshop estimate. Customs formalities apply in both directions, and a temporary export with re-import after repair is usually the right procedure. Work tied to defence or space programmes can carry export-control obligations at your end; establishing those is for you and your forwarder to do before anything is crated.

Coverage

Towns and cities we hear from in California

Our experience with cross-border spindle projects allows us to prepare transport, inspection and any necessary on-site work in a structured way. From these towns and cities we regularly receive enquiries. Los Angeles, Torrance and Long Beach form the South Bay and harbour area where launch and aerostructure work is concentrated, with Oxnard further up the coast in Ventura County. Irvine and San Diego carry much of the medical device machining in the south. Fremont and San Jose sit at the southern end of San Francisco Bay, among the semiconductor equipment suppliers. Crates from the south usually leave via LAX, those from the Bay Area via San Francisco or Oakland.

Questions

California spindle repair — frequently asked

Sometimes, but not often. For a common spindle with parts and rebuilders within a day's drive, shipping to Germany and back rarely pays for itself. For a rare, high-value or discontinued unit, an imported grinding spindle or an obsolete high-frequency head, it frequently does. Describe the machine and the symptoms and we will tell you which of the two you have.

International jobs are handled through direct technical coordination, reliable freight planning and, where appropriate, a scheduled visit to the machine. On-site work in California is possible only by prior technical arrangement, planned far in advance so that the right instruments and the likely parts travel with the technician. Rebuilds themselves are done on the bench in Germany.

Typically 5 to 10 working days from arrival, depending on parts availability and what the teardown reveals. That is an estimate, not a committed date; a binding date is only valid if we confirm it in writing. Transit each way sits on top of that and is the forwarder's business rather than ours. From California, allow real time for it.

Machine brand

Machine brands we see from California

We are independent and not tied to any builder. These are the makes whose spindles come across the bench most often. Haas spindles are rarely the reason a crate leaves California, since the builder's home state has its own support. More typical are high-speed units from Makino, Hermle and DMG Mori five-axis machines used on aerostructures and implants, and grinding spindles from Toyoda machines. Grob and Hermle heads, with their European designs and Heidenhain or Siemens controls, tend to be the ones local rebuilders pass on.
