CNC spindle repair for Illinois
Every spindle we take on is repaired in one workshop, in Sankt Augustin near Bonn. Nothing of ours is based in Illinois. From Chicago the crate at least has an easy run: O'Hare is one of the simplest places in the country to put a spindle on a direct flight to Frankfurt, an hour and a half from our bench.
The market
Chicago metalworking and the equipment builders
Illinois holds one of the densest metalworking clusters anywhere. Job shops and tool rooms across Chicagoland and the Fox Valley, aerospace and fastener work around Rockford, and the agricultural and construction equipment trade at Peoria, Moline and Rock Island. The spindles follow that spread, from small vertical machining centre cartridges in an Elgin job shop to heavy boring and milling heads in an equipment builder's own plant. The awkward ones are almost always imported: European grinding spindles, Swiss-type headstocks, high-speed heads on machines bought used and no longer supported by anyone.
Scope
Spindle work we carry out for customers in Illinois
Every operation below is done in our own workshop in Germany. Follow a link for what it involves and what we need from you. The Illinois units that make the trip are usually the more involved jobs: motor rewinding on discontinued motorised spindles, housing repair and regrinding where bearing seats have been worn by repeated rebuilds, and encoder and sensor repair on European high-speed heads. For a unit that has already come back twice, the teardown report from diagnostics and inspection often matters as much as the repair, because it shows why the earlier attempts failed.
Coverage
Towns and cities we hear from in Illinois
We coordinate collection, technical assessment and return transport directly, with planned on-site support available for diagnosis, removal or commissioning. From these towns and cities we regularly receive enquiries. Chicago, Elgin, Aurora and Joliet lie within easy reach of O'Hare, with Elgin and Aurora in the Fox Valley and Joliet on the I-80 and I-55 corridor to the south-west. Rockford is about 90 miles out along I-90. Peoria, Decatur and Moline in the Quad Cities belong to the central and western equipment-building belt, from where a crate normally goes by road to Chicago before it flies.
Getting the spindle here
An easy flight, a crowded local market
The freight leg is not the problem here. Direct air cargo from O'Hare to Frankfurt is routine, and the road leg at this end is short. The problem is that Illinois already carries more spindle rebuilders than most European countries. For a common machining centre cartridge, sending it across the Atlantic rarely pays for itself, and we would rather say so than take the crate. Customs formalities apply in both directions; your forwarder handles them, and a temporary export with re-import after repair is normally the right procedure.
Machine brand
Machine brands we see from Illinois
We are independent and not tied to any builder. These are the makes whose spindles come across the bench most often. Mazak, Okuma and Haas units from Chicagoland job shops are mostly handled within the state. What reaches us from Illinois tends to be different: Hermle and Grob heads from tool rooms and aerospace suppliers around Rockford, Toyoda grinding spindles, and Makino or DMG Mori high-speed units bought second-hand. Heavy boring heads from equipment plants usually run on Siemens or Heidenhain controls, so drive and feedback data help us prepare the teardown.
Questions
Illinois spindle repair — frequently asked
Usually there is no reason to. The work that reaches us from Illinois is the residue: discontinued European spindles, high-speed heads with no parts route in North America, or a unit that has already been rebuilt twice and still runs hot after an hour. For an ordinary cartridge off a common machining centre, stay local and keep the freight money.
Typically 5 to 10 working days from arrival, depending on parts availability and what the teardown reveals. That is an estimate, not a committed date; a binding date is only valid if we confirm it in writing. Air freight in each direction is on top of it, and the schedule for that belongs to your forwarder rather than to us.
We coordinate collection, technical assessment and return transport directly, with planned on-site support available for diagnosis, removal or commissioning. On-site work in Illinois is possible but only by prior technical arrangement, planned far enough ahead that the right instruments and the likely parts travel with the technician. That suits diagnosis or a difficult removal. Rebuild work always happens on the bench in Sankt Augustin.
