Modernisation
Spindle retrofit and upgrade
A rebuild is the right moment to improve a spindle. Older units can often take modern bearings, better sealing, sealing air or a finer balancing grade, which reduces heat, extends service life and helps the spindle cope with today’s tools and speeds. We only recommend changes that are technically sensible for the specific spindle.
Scope
What can be upgraded
Not every spindle can be changed in every way. Bearing seats, available space and the original design set the limits, so every upgrade is checked against the measured spindle before it is offered.
Bearings
Hybrid bearings with ceramic balls run cooler and tolerate higher speeds than all-steel bearings. Where the design allows, a different bearing arrangement or precision class is possible.
Sealing and sealing air
Improved labyrinths, seals or a sealing-air connection keep coolant and dust out of the front bearing, one of the most common causes of early failure.
Cooling and lubrication
Cleaning and reworking cooling channels, or changing from grease to oil-air lubrication where the machine supports it, lowers the running temperature.
Balancing and clamping
Balancing to a finer grade than original and a renewed clamping set with measured force improve surface finish and tool life.
Process
How an upgrade is planned
-
1
Measure the spindle
The spindle is inspected and measured as for any repair. This shows what is worn and what the design allows.
-
2
Suggest the options
We list the sensible upgrades with their effect and cost, separately from the basic repair, so you can choose.
-
3
Rebuild with upgrades
The agreed changes are carried out during the rebuild and documented with parts used and measured values.
-
4
Test and report
Balancing and run-in test with recorded temperature show the result. The report names every change made to the original build.
Checklist
What helps us assess an upgrade
To judge an upgrade we need to know how the spindle is used today, not only how it was specified. Speeds, tools, materials and known problems show where the original design reaches its limits. What the spindle should achieve afterwards is the goal against which every proposed change is checked.
- Spindle type plate and machine details
- Current speeds, tools and materials machined
- Known problems: heat, coolant ingress, short bearing life
- What the spindle should achieve after the upgrade
When it is needed
When an upgrade is worth considering
A rebuild is a good moment to remove weak points of the original design, for example bearings that wear quickly, sealing that lets coolant in or limited cooling. An upgrade is worth considering when the same fault keeps returning or when the spindle is now used differently than originally planned.
Recurring bearing failures
The same spindle fails again after a few months, often because of contamination, heat or lubrication. Repeating the original repair would not change that.
Changed machining
The machine now runs other materials, tools or higher speeds than it was designed for, and the spindle runs hot or chatters.
Older machine, sound structure
The machine itself is in good condition, and a modernised spindle extends its useful life at a fraction of a new machine’s cost.
Questions
Spindle retrofit and upgrade — frequently asked
Yes. Mounting dimensions, interfaces and connections stay compatible with the machine. Changes that would affect the fit are not carried out without explicit agreement.
No. Some designs leave no room for other bearings or seals. In that case we say so and limit the work to a careful repair to the original specification.
It depends on the change. Hybrid bearings or improved seals usually add moderately to the rebuild cost. We quote upgrades separately so you can decide case by case.
No. We are an independent workshop and not authorised by the machine or spindle builders. Upgrades are our own engineering work and are documented in the report.
