HSD Spindle Repair and Electrospindle Rebuild

HSD S.p.A., part of the Biesse Group in Italy, builds electrospindles, heads and aggregates for machining centres that cut wood, panels, stone, glass, plastics and aluminium. That is why an HSD spindle turns up on Biesse, Homag, SCM, Weeke, Holz-Her, Felder, Masterwood and on a long list of CNC routers from other builders. We rebuild HSD electrospindles in our own workshop in Sankt Augustin, Germany: bearings, tool clamping, sensors and windings, followed by dynamic balancing and a run-in on the test bench. We are an independent workshop — you send the spindle to us directly.

Identification

One spindle maker, dozens of machine brands

HSD supplies spindles to many machine builders, so the same unit can sit in a Biesse machining centre, an SCM nesting router or a CNC router built in Asia or Turkey. For the repair, the HSD maker plate is what counts: it gives the series (for example ES 919, ES 929, ES 939, ES 951, ES 779/789 or ES 988), the serial number and the version.

If the machine builder has added its own label with a part number, photograph that too. It tells us how the connectors, sensors and settings were configured for your machine. HSD spindles carrying a Homag Group number are covered in detail on our Homag spindle repair page.

  • HSD maker plate: series, type and serial number
  • Tool interface: HSK F63, HSK E, ISO30 or ER collet
  • Cooling: air (fan) or liquid jacket
  • Air connections: tool-release cylinder, cone cleaning, sealing air

Scope

HSD electrospindles we rebuild

An HSD electrospindle combines an inverter-fed induction motor, precision bearing arrangements, a pneumatic tool-change system and a set of sensors in one housing. We repair all of it as one job.

HSK F63 and ISO30 tool-change spindles

The main spindles of machining centres and nesting routers. We replace the bearings, restore the collet or gripper, disc springs and drawbar, and check the release cylinder and cone cleaning.

ER collet spindles

Simpler units on routers with manual tool change. The focus is on the bearings, the collet nut and seat, and smooth running across the full speed range.

Air-cooled and liquid-cooled units

On fan-cooled spindles we check the impeller and fan motor; on liquid-cooled spindles, the cooling jacket passages and the fitting seals.

Stator and winding

Winding resistance and insulation are measured on every job. Where needed we carry out electrospindle rewinding, followed by electrical tests.

Symptoms

Common faults on HSD spindles

HSD electrospindles run every day in furniture, kitchen, door and window production, in sign shops cutting plastics and composites, and in panel processing. These are the faults they most often arrive with.

Bearing noise and heat

Humming, whistling or rough running and a hot spindle nose. Hybrid bearings with ceramic balls are replaced as a set, matched to the exact spindle version.

Tool runout

Poor edge quality, chatter marks, short cutter life. We measure taper and shaft runout and restore the contact faces by taper regrinding.

Tool will not clamp or release

The cause lies in the drawbar, disc springs, collet or gripper, or in the seals of the release cylinder. Clamping force is measured before and after the repair.

Sensor faults

Tool-clamped, no-tool and speed sensors stop the machine even when the mechanics are sound. We adjust and test them on the bench.

Dust, moisture, taper fretting

Wet compressed air or a loss of sealing air draws dust inside, and fretting marks appear on the taper. We find the source and remove the cause.

Winding, fan, inverter alarms

Overcurrent trips, insulation breakdown or a failed fan. We test the stator and cooling and give recommendations on the drive settings.

Process

How we rebuild an HSD electrospindle

  1. We identify the spindle from the HSD plate and agree the scope of diagnostics with you.
  2. The unit is stripped, cleaned of dust and resin, and the shaft, housing, taper, clamping set and stator are measured.
  3. You receive a written quotation with inspection photos; work starts once you approve it.
  4. Bearings, seals and clamping parts are replaced, sourced new from the European market in original or equivalent quality — the quote states which.
  5. Sensors are adjusted, the rotor is balanced and the spindle is run in across its speed range with temperature monitoring.
  6. The spindle goes back to you with a test report, ready to fit.

Why send your HSD spindle to us

Our own workshop in Germany

Inspection, repair, balancing and run-in in one place, by the same team.

Parts from the European market

Bearings and clamping parts are identified from the plate and part number and quoted before fitting.

Across Europe and worldwide

Send the spindle by courier or freight forwarder. Within the EU there is no customs paperwork; for other countries we help with the export and return documents.

Questions

HSD spindle repair — frequently asked

Yes. HSD spindles are fitted to machines of many brands, from Homag and SCM to CNC routers built in Asia and Turkey. The repair is defined by the HSD plate, not by the machine brand.

Both labels matter. The specifics of HSD units in Homag machines are described on our Homag spindle repair page; send photos of the HSD plate and the Homag part number and we identify the unit from both.

Photos of the HSD plate, the machine builder's label if there is one, the taper and the connections, plus a short description of the symptoms. That is enough for an initial assessment.

It depends on what the strip-down shows and on the parts required. We give an estimate when the spindle arrives and state the date in the written quote.

Yes. See HSD spindles and spare parts — we offer the options alongside the repair quote, so you can compare both.

Send us a photo of the HSD plate

Tell us the machine model and the HSD series and describe the symptoms. We come back with an initial assessment and a written quote before any work begins.
