Grinding Machine Spindle Repair

A grinding machine asks more of its spindle's smooth running than any other machine: every trace of vibration shows on the part surface. In our workshop in Sankt Augustin, Germany, we repair spindles of surface, cylindrical, internal and tool and cutter grinders — with precision bearing replacement, runout measured in microns, dynamic balancing and a run-in with temperature monitoring.

Bearing replacement: shaft, spacers and bearing seats are checked before assembly.

Machine type

Four kinds of grinder, four different spindles

On a surface grinder, the wheelhead spindle carries a large-diameter wheel and runs on a built-in or flange-mounted motor. A cylindrical grinder adds a workhead spindle, which sets the roundness of the part. Internal grinders work with small-diameter high-speed motor spindles, and tool and cutter grinders with compact spindles for wheels of different shapes.

Before the repair we establish the bearing type, the lubrication system and how the wheel is mounted — that defines the repair procedure.

  • Machine plate and spindle plate, if fitted
  • Bearings: rolling-element, hydrodynamic or hydrostatic
  • Lubrication: grease, oil-air or circulating oil
  • Drive: belt, built-in or flange-mounted motor
  • Wheel mounting: flange, taper, thread

Designs

How grinding spindles are built

What they share is high stiffness and minimal runout. What differs is the bearing system and the drive — and with them, the scope of checks.

Wheelhead spindle

Most often on precision rolling-element bearings with belt or direct drive. We check the shaft journals, the wheel flange seat, the preload and the seals.

Hydrodynamic and hydrostatic bearings

The shaft runs on an oil film, so journal geometry, clearances and oil cleanliness decide the result. We assess these units individually and agree the right scope of work with you.

Internal grinding motor spindles

Small-diameter high-speed units with a built-in motor, made for example by GMN and Fischer. Bearings, rotor, winding and cooling are covered in one repair.

Workhead spindle

Turns the part between centres or in a chuck. Its runout goes straight into roundness, so we measure the shaft and locating surfaces with particular care.

Symptoms

Common faults on grinding machine spindles

In grinding, the spindle reports a problem through the part: the surface loses its finish before any noise can be heard.

Vibration and lobing

Waviness, chatter marks, patches on a mirror finish. We trace the source: bearings, rotor or wheel unbalance, or the drive.

Bearing wear

Rising noise and temperature, loss of stiffness. We fit precision bearings with the correct preload and check the assembly at each bearing position.

Shaft runout

Causes size and form errors. We measure shaft and wheel-seat runout in microns and restore the locating surfaces by regrinding where needed.

Spindle overheating

Excessive preload, too little or too much lubricant, fouled cooling. Heat changes part size over a shift, so we record temperature throughout the run-in.

Lubrication problems

Uneven oil-air supply, dried-out or contaminated grease, coolant in the bearings. We restore the seals and the correct amount of lubricant.

Unbalance

After parts are replaced or after an impact, the rotor loses its balance. We dynamically balance the rotor together with the parts that turn with it.

Precision

Precision bearings, balancing and measurement

Grinding spindles run on high-precision angular contact bearings of classes P4 and P2, supplied as matched pairs or sets with a defined preload. Bearing makers such as SKF, FAG, NSK or GMN offer these on the European market; we identify the right set from the existing bearings and drawing data, quote it, fit it in a clean area and verify the preload. Shaft, face and wheel-seat runout is measured with dial indicators reading in microns and recorded in the report, so you see the condition of the unit before and after the repair.

Repair sequence

  1. We receive the spindle, record the symptoms and operating conditions, and agree the scope of diagnostics.
  2. The unit is stripped; shaft, housing, bearing seats and bearings are measured and the lubrication system is checked.
  3. You receive a written quotation with inspection photos; work starts once you approve it.
  4. New bearings of the required precision class and new seals are fitted and the preload is set.
  5. The rotor is balanced and the spindle is run in with stepped speed increases and temperature monitoring.
  6. It goes back to you with a measurement report and recommendations on lubrication and preventive maintenance.

Questions

Grinding spindle repair — frequently asked

Yes. We repair spindles from machines of every generation, including grinders that have been in production for decades. Bearings are selected by dimensions and precision class.

During the run-in the lubricant distributes in the bearings and the temperature settles. We raise the speed in steps and record the temperature so that the spindle reaches working conditions without overheating.

We balance the spindle rotor together with the parts that turn with it and give you recommendations for balancing the wheel and flange on your machine.

Photos of the spindle, the machine plate and the wheel mounting, plus a short description: how the part surface looks and whether there is noise or heat.

It depends on what the strip-down shows and on the bearings of the required class. We give an estimate when the spindle arrives and state the date in the written quote.

Describe your grinding machine

Give us the machine type and model and describe the symptoms and the part surface — we come back with an initial assessment and a written quote before any work begins. The spindle travels to us by courier or freight forwarder from anywhere in Europe and beyond.
