Milling Machine and Machining Centre Spindle Repair
A CNC milling spindle works with interrupted cuts, frequent tool changes and coolant fed through the shaft. Repairing it always means working on several systems at once: the bearing arrangement, tool clamping, the rotary union, cooling and sensors. In our workshop in Sankt Augustin, Germany, we repair spindles of vertical and horizontal machining centres, 5-axis machines and CNC knee-type and bed-type milling machines.
Inside the unit
What is inside a machining centre spindle
A modern milling spindle is a shaft on precision angular contact bearings, a drawbar with a disc spring pack and gripper, a hydraulic or pneumatic release cylinder, a rotary union for through-spindle coolant and a cooling jacket in the housing. Each of these affects accuracy and service life, so we check all of them during inspection.
For an initial assessment, photos of the spindle plate and taper plus the machine model are enough — from them we identify the design and plan the work.
- Tool interface: SK/BT/CAT 40 and 50, HSK-A63, HSK-A100
- Drive: motor spindle, belt, direct-drive coupling, geared head
- Clamping: drawbar, disc springs, gripper, release cylinder
- Through-spindle coolant, rotary union, cooling jacket

Milling machine spindle types we repair
Milling machines and machining centres use four main drive layouts. The layout sets the scope of work, the parts list and the test sequence.
Motor spindle (electrospindle)
The motor is built into the spindle housing: rotor on the shaft, stator in the housing. Besides the bearings, we test the stator, winding insulation and speed sensor, and carry out rewinding where needed.
Belt-driven spindle
A separate motor drives the spindle through a toothed or poly-V belt. We replace the bearings, check the pulley and fits, and set the correct belt tension after fitting.
Direct drive through a coupling
The motor is aligned with the spindle and connected by a coupling. We check the coupling, alignment and fits, and rebuild the bearing arrangement as a set.
Geared milling heads
Spindle heads with a multi-step gearbox for heavy milling. Gears, shafts and gearbox bearings are inspected together with the spindle.
Symptoms
Common faults on machining centre spindles
Most milling spindle repairs come from the way the unit works every day: tool changes several times a minute, high-pressure coolant, impact loads on entry. This is what we see most often.
Bearing noise and heat
Humming, whistling, a rising nose temperature. Bearings are replaced as a set, with the correct preload and grease fill.
Taper and shaft runout
Chatter marks on the part and fast cutter wear. We measure runout and restore the taper by regrinding.
Weak clamping or tool will not release
The cause lies in the disc springs, gripper, drawbar or release cylinder. Clamping force is measured before and after the repair.
Coolant leaking past the rotary union
Emulsion reaches the bearings and sensors. We replace the rotary union and seals and check the passages in the drawbar.
After a crash
A bent shaft, damaged taper, shifted bearings. We assess the geometry and agree with you the scope of housing and shaft repair.
Process
How we repair a milling machine spindle
- We identify the design from the plate, drawing or photos and agree the scope of diagnostics.
- The spindle is stripped and the shaft, bearing seats, taper, clamping force and rotary union are measured.
- You receive a written quotation with inspection photos; work starts once you approve it.
- Bearings, seals and clamping parts are replaced, sourced new from the European market.
- The spindle is assembled, balanced and run in on the bench with temperature and runout monitoring.
- It goes back to you with a measurement report, by courier or freight forwarder.
Machine brands and spindle makers
Machining centre spindles reach us from Haas, DMG Mori, Mazak, Okuma, Doosan, Hermle, Makino, Brother, Hurco, Grob, Toyoda and Mitsubishi machines; the specifics of each brand are on its own page.
Many builders fit motor spindles from specialist makers such as Kessler, Weiss (Siemens), GMN or Fischer. We repair these units from the spindle maker's plate, whatever the machine brand.
Questions
Milling machine spindle repair — frequently asked
Look for a separate motor with a belt or coupling next to the spindle head. If there is no motor there and power cables run straight into the spindle housing, it is a motor spindle. Send us a photo and we confirm the design.
In most cases, yes. After strip-down we measure the shaft, taper and fits, assess the housing and propose the most sensible repair route with a quote.
Yes, we work with all common interfaces — SK, BT and CAT 40/50, HSK-A63 and HSK-A100 — together with the matching drawbars, grippers and release cylinders.
The machine model, photos of the spindle plate, taper and connections, and a description of the symptoms: noise, heat, clamping or orientation alarms.
By courier or freight forwarder, in rigid packaging with the taper protected. Within the EU there is no customs paperwork; for other countries we help with the export and return documents.
